Neapolis - Christoupolis - Kavala are its historical names.

It has been inhabited since the Neolithic age.
In the 7th century BC it was a Thassian colony called Neapolis and later it joined the Athenian Alliance.

It gains great prosperity during the Macedonian rule, after Philip II has annexed it, its harbor serving Filippi.

Philippi : The town was founded by the people of Thassos, but it wasn't until Philip, father of Alexander the Great, named it after himself, in 356 B.C., that it became well known. It is located at a distance of 15 km from Kavala and, thanks to conscientious archaeological digging work, it currently offers visitors deep insight into the ancient Greek, Roman an Byzantine history. You can visit the Ancient Theatre, the Town Walls, The Roman Forum, Basilicas dating back to the old Christian times, the Octagon. Saint Paul the Apostle stopped off in Filippi and founded the first Christian Church in Europe and it is right here, in Zygaktis river, that he baptized the first Christian woman in Europe, Lydia Filippesia (Lydia from Filippi).
